Antique Japanese Handmade Cotton 'Awa Shijira ori'
Mid weight: suitable for Jackets, dressmaking, etc & some home applications.
This Japanese antique fabric is called "Awa Shijira ori" and is dyed with traditional botanical dyes. Awa Shijira-ori is known for its uneven surface called shibo- it adds particular texture and beauty. Vivid shibo is achieved by immersing the newly woven cloth in boiling water before drying. It is traditionally made by warping the loom with intentionally varying tension to create wrinkles and shrinks. This type of cloth was woven mainly for farmers in the Edo period (17-19c).
It is highly hygroscopic as it is made of cotton and is best clothing to withstand the heat of the summer.
All of our textiles are sourced ourselves. We love the imperfections that come from hand spinning and dye variation.
approx 14”wide and sold by the yard.
wash before use on cold/delicate cycle with mild detergent, adding one spoonful of white vinegar per yard of fabric to help fix the natural dye. Do not tumble dry.
