Himalayan Handwoven Wild Nettle - Diamond Twill

$45.00

Heavy weight: suitable for coating, upholstery, etc

The indigenous nettle in Nepal is a giant relative of the stinging nettle found in other parts of the world. Locally known as ‘Allo’ or the Giant Himalayan Nettle, they thrive at high altitude and have been gathered and processed in Nepal for centuries to use as clothing as well as sacks and bags for various uses around the home and farm. The fibre is a hollow fibre which is cool in summer and warm in winter as well as being quite waterproof. As its indigenous it grows very quickly, without any pesticides or insecticides relying only on rainfall.

This fabric is made entirely by a cooperative of Nepali women, who gather the wild nettles and process them by hand into yarn, before weaving it by hand into this colorful and textural wonder.

This is a handwoven twill: undyed/unbleached nettle yarn with undyed/unbleached cotton

All of our textiles are sourced ourselves. This fabric has a smooth soft finish and a variation in tone throughout due to the natural colors in the dried nettle fibers
