Organic Turkish Şile Cloth
Light weight: suitable for shirting, dressmaking etc & some home applications
Şile Cloth, pronounced shi-lé, is 100% cotton and owes its qualities to its unique production process. It’s made in the city of Şile on the Black Sea Coast of Turkey where it has been made for hundreds of years. To produce traditional Şile, the warp threads “Kelep” are treated with a special flour paste called “çırşı” in copper cauldrons and boiled with sea water, to make them coarse and glossy. The cloth is handwoven, with the çırşı treated warp threads creating the signature crinkle effect. After weaving the fabric is washed in the Black Sea sea and laid out on the beaches to dry. It is thought that the iodine and quartz in the sand give the fabric its special sweat-proof properties. Traditionally, the fabric has many uses- often as garments embroidered with traditional cross stitch motifs from the region.
