Antique Sicilian Kermes Red Rope
This antique rope is originally from Sicily, where it was made from hemp and dyed with Kermes- a red dye derived from the dried bodies of an insect known as Kermes Vermilio. These insects are native in the mediterranean, living as parasites on the Kermes Oak. They have been used in the region as a red dye since antiquity and are still a popular natural dye in Sicily.
